Rillito Flood Control Mural is Done, April 19, 2023

The long-awaited mural on the north side of the Loop near Country Club bridge is done! Called “Tracks and Trails,” it’s “meant as both a symbol of unity and resilience and reminds us of our shared commitment to protect this natural resource for generations to come,” said Jessica Gonzales, one of the two artists.

The mural is the largest in Pima County: 4,000 square feet. The artists, Jessica Gonzales of Tucson and Rock ‘‘CYFI’’ Martinez of Minneapolis and Tucson, were selected by the Pima County Public Art Advisory Committee for the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona. RillitoBend resident Stephen Brigham was one of the jurors.

It took three months to complete the mural. Rains delayed the project, as the Rillito was really a river for almost a month.

Two residents, Jim Altenstadter and Mary Bird, documented the progress of the painting during their daily walks, and here are a few of their photos.
